Scientists are probing why fish in a section of the Upper Mazaruni district have died and there and were linked to a now ended localized outbreak of gastroenteritis among residents in Chinonweing and surrounding areas.

They had eaten fish and drank water from two rivers, authorities said.

Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Shamdeo Persaud said teams from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Biodiversity Centre Laboratory are returning to the area to take more water and soil samples.

Water samples tested by the Government Analyst Food and Drug Department have not shown what may have caused the fish to die, he said.

“Up to now they are unsure. It’s a little difficult at this point in time. The results are inconclusive. The EPA and Biodiversity lab are involved to take some more samples and investigation. The EPA is knowledgeable about fish and soils,” Dr Persaud told Demerara Waves Online News
(
www.demwaves.com).

Dr. Persaud emphasised that the outbreak was over and the emphasis continues to be on water-purification and general sanitation including public awareness.

The Health Ministry, in a statement, said experts have concluded that the gastroenteritis outbreak dating back to November 2011 was caused by consuming fish and river water.

“The Ministry of Health has concluded that this outbreak was caused by toxins released in the water by the dead and decaying worms. The Yarrow fish may have eaten the worms which resulted in their death,” the statement added.

The treatment of water continues in the communities along these rivers.

On notice of the sighting of dead fish and a local outbreak of acute gastroenteritis on November 4, in the Chinoweing area, the Ministry of Health said it dispatched an outbreak investigation team to the area the very next day.

That team was led by Director of Environmental Health Unit, Dr Ashok Sookdeo and comprised a medical officer; a Medex, a laboratory technologist and a surveillance officer. These were joined by the three local health workers from the area.

According to statistics by the Health Ministry, the team conducted a medical clinic and treated about 110 persons including adults and children. Of these, 15 persons (8 males and 7 females), all above the age of 5 years were found with symptoms of gastroenteritis (vomiting and diarrhoea). Treatment was administered and all of the persons had recovered before the team departed the location on November 8, 2011. It was found that of 11 of the ill persons had consumed water from the Haieka or Mazaruni River, while eight had eaten yarrow fish from these rivers. Four had consumed both river water and fish. The team also collected 26 stool and 44 blood samples from among patient and community members which were brought to Georgetown and tested at the National Public Health Reference Laboratory (NPHRL) and at CAREC laboratory in Trinidad for possible pathogens.

The result indicates that no significant gastrointestinal pathogen was detected from the stool sample and that one blood sample was positive for Hepatitis and two for Dengue, according to the Health Ministry.

Treatment and advice were given accordingly. The health team also conducted an environmental assessment and found both dead fish and worms in the rivers.

The team also conducted health education sessions for the community and distributed educational literature as well as the supplies for the purification of drinking water. The community was advised not to consume fish found dead in the rivers.

Two high level teams from the Ministry of Health are set to visit the upper Mazaruni District in Region Seven to provide an update to residents of the Chinoweing area on the results of an investigation conducted on reports of a local outbreak of gastroenteritis two months ago. The teams will also probe accounts of similar outbreaks in surrounding areas.

Led by Chief Medical Officer Dr Shamdeo Persaud and comprising representatives from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, the Environmental Protection Agency, Regional Health Services, and the Environmental Health Unit the teams are scheduled to depart Georgetown on Thursday.
Over the next few days, the investigative team will be in the area updating the residents on its findings and conducting additional education/ awareness sessions.

They will also visit the surrounding communities of Kamarang, Jawalla, Phillipai, Quebanang, Waramadong and Kako to follow up reports of possible outbreaks.

In conjunction with the Toshaos and other leaders, the Ministry of Health will simultaneously host medical outreach activities and seek to address issues affecting the residents of these indigenous communities.

The public is hereby reminded of the need to always consume safe water and to desist from consuming fish and other foods that are unsafe.
