GEORGETOWN, Guyana -- Guyanese celebrate the 171st anniversary of the Arrival of immigrants to Guyana on May 5 and the three main political parties in Guyana have issued a joint call for unity here.
The ruling People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) in a statement said, in Guyana’s quest for development all must recognize the contribution made by the Indians when they arrived here years ago.
The party adds that there are many challenges facing Guyana including the quest for national unity.
“to achieve unity and to strengthen the measures already taken towards this end, the indo Guyanese community must jealously safeguard their own unity, but the challenges of today are much bigger and for us to achieve unity it requires our united effort as a people, a united people that can face up to today’s challenges” the party said in a statement.
Meanwhile, The People’s National Congress Reform says it joins all likeminded groups at home and in the Diaspora in celebrating the 171st anniversary of the arrival of Indian in Guyana .
The party in a statement said the occasion offers the opportunity for the nation as a whole to recognise the important role that their Indian ancestors and fellow compatriots have played in the development of Guyana .
“The Party also believes that this is also an opportunity for the nation to understand that we all share a common destiny and that racial harmony, tolerance and understanding are essential to the further and overall development of this country. The development of Guyana can no longer be deferred. It is therefore essential that all stakeholders, especially political parties, and all relevant social groups and organization make a firm commitment to exercise honesty, maturity and good judgment in order that this nation can put an end to racism, which has often stymied the development of our society and nation.”
The PNCR concluded that all citizens must reflect on the significance of this occasion and to take to heart the lesson that racial harmony and understanding are the keys to their survival and long term development.
In its Arrival Day message the Alliance for Change (AFC) said it salutes all Guyanese on the occasion and asked that the sons and daughters of the many who arrived on these shores in bondage, and in servitude, have much to be proud of, and have to pay homage to, their sacrifices and contributions.
“All of us save except for our indigenous brothers and sisters, came across oceans and seas to be here. We established our roots, contributed to Guyana’s development, and have for the past centuries sought to forge a Guyanese identity,” the party said.
