President to stipulate Guyana’s position on avoiding deforestation
at launching today By Wendella Davidson
PRESIDENT Bharrat Jagdeo will today make public a technical report that outlines Guyana’s position on the issue of avoiding deforestation.
It will happen at the Guyana International Conference Centre (GICC), Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, where a large number of stakeholders have been invited to attend from 15:00 h, Cabinet Secretary, Dr Roger Luncheon, announced yesterday.
He noted that, while Guyana has very high forest coverage, its standing has been subjected to historically low rates of deforestation.
It is this country’s expectation that its contribution, in maintaining its standing forest towards environmental conservation, is treated fairly, Luncheon said.
Pointing out that the technical report, compiled over time, would be presented to the world, Luncheon said one such opportunity will be later this month, at a meeting in Poland, to review the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol.
Guyana’s formidable engagement with the United Kingdom (UK) Administration would allow for other opportunities to forward its policy on the issue, he explained.
Luncheon reiterated that, whatever benefits should accrue from the agreement, Guyana and other countries, in similar circumstances with low rates of deforestation, would have reasonable expectations.
Since 1989, Guyana has been making sustained efforts to protect its rainforest and evidence of this was its donation, since then, of one million acres, at Iwokrama, for the purpose.
In addition, Guyana forged a partnership with Conservation International (CI) in setting aside a vast area to devise mechanisms for the exchange of economic value for eco-system services.
Despite those actions, it is still not enough to avoid deforestation, a highly cost effective way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the best value for money in mitigating against future climate change, President Jagdeo said previously.
He said the absence of mechanisms for avoiding tropical deforestation within the global framework is viewed as the single most glaring example of how the world is not adopting a proportionate focus on the options for combating climate change.
The President has for some time now been lobbying for Guyana to receive monetary compensation for its standing forest। He has also offered the services of the forest in the world’s battle against climate change. Guyana is one of four countries remaining in the world which still have their forests intact. As a consequence, the Head of State has been recognised on the international front for his efforts, especially in the environmental arena.
