GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) - Guyana has fired six top customs officials who were cleared in a fraud and bribery case involving a $3 million shipment of beer from Venezuela.

Revenue Authority director Kurshid Sattaur said Tuesday that their positions had become redundant and that their salaries were costing the agency $30,000 a month.

The officials had been suspended with pay for more than two years during the investigation. They were cleared of accusations that they cheated tax collectors of roughly $250,000 by claiming the beer as soft drinks.

The agency says it will install security cameras at all airports, piers and other locations where shipped goods are inspected.
