Guyana miners accuse cops, military in gold thefts

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) Miners demanded Friday that the government investigate corruption among military and police officials who they say routinely take gold in exchange for protection and other favors.

The miners' group spoke a day after authorities said they detained a military lieutenant and three soldiers on charges of stealing large amounts of gold and cash from a mining camp in the country's northwest region. Government officials didn't release the amount of the heist.

Army Chief of Staff Gary Best said his organization is talking to miners to gather complaints. It's not the first time the military has tried to investigate such allegations, he added.

"But it is the first time there is so much evidence that suggests ... a serious offense has been committed," Best said.

The small South American country bordering Venezuela is among the world's top 30 gold producers.

Extortion is rampant because most mines are located in remote areas where police and military officers have little to no supervision, said Tony Shields, executive secretary of the Gold and Diamond Miners Association.

"This is routine, this is normal," he said.

Officers usually target illegal miners from Brazil, who pay bribes to avoid deportation. The government estimates that up to 15,000 illegal miners work deep in the South American jungle.

But the lieutenant and soldiers were detained only after they mistakenly assaulted a privately owned camp with Guyanese miners, who then called their supervisors, Shields said.
